Introduction

We are part of a cosmic drama. The Bible foretells a final battle in which Christ will subdue all forces of evil. At that time He will set up His kingdom on the earth.

  • Christ will return to conquer evil, and reign as universal King. (Revelation 19:11-13, Daniel 7:13-14)
  • The evil one and all demonic forces will be expelled to hell forever. (Revelation 20:10, Matthew 25:41)

Until then, Jesus Christ is in the process of reclaiming territory given over to evil and sin. This happens through the prayers of His children.

The purpose of this session is to help believers understand the importance of their role in prayer for their sphere of influence and the world.

  • Jesus has given us authority in His name over evil and demonic forces. (Luke 10:19)
  • God’s strategy today involves evangelism through prayer. (1 Timothy 2:1,4)

1. Christ is preparing believers to usher in His kingdom through prayer

Hebrews 2:7-8 tells us that all things have been placed under the authority of Christ, yet we do not see this globally. In places where evil has set up its kingdom, much intercession is required.

“Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done.” (Matthew 6:10)

When we pray according to Christ’s instructions in Matthew 6:10, we are placing people, situations, and all other kingdoms under the dominion and rule of Jesus Christ here and now.

  • Prayer aligns us with God’s mission to reach all nations. (1 Timothy 2:1-4)
  • It trains us to trust God’s authority and resist evil. (Ephesians 6:18)
  • It prepares our hearts to serve with Christ in His kingdom agenda. (Ephesians 1:18-19)

2. Intercessors have a royal job description

As God’s priests on earth, we appeal to our Great High Priest who is already interceding for us. (Hebrews 4:14-16)

Our role is to engage in prayer in the following ways:

  • Assessment: We discern specific human needs and/or spiritual opponents as prayer burdens from God.
  • Requisition: We request God’s solutions for those problems in prayer.
  • Distribution: We ask God in faith for means to get His supplies to the areas of need, and to bring forth results for His glory.

God has chosen to accomplish His work through our prayers. As part of His royal family, it is our privilege and calling to intercede for others. Our partnership with Christ through the Holy Spirit is the way God fulfills His plans in the world today.

Conclusion: God is urgently seeking intercessors who will rise to their divine position and calling. Our development in prayer, therefore, is as important as receiving answers from Him.
