We pray effectively when filled with the Holy Spirit.
“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God.” 1 Corinthians 2:12
“In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” Romans 8:26
Jesus said He would give us an advocate – one who indwells us with supernatural strength and love – in the person of God, the Holy Spirit. Through His ministry, we are sanctified and empowered to do the will of God. Jesus referred to the Spirit when He said: “Out of your inmost being will flow rivers of living water.” John 7:38
We do not possess spiritual power apart from the filling of God’s Spirit (see Galatians 5:16). Therefore, Ephesians 6:18 admonishes us to “pray in the Spirit at all times”. The following points are suggested ways to do this:
- Attune to God: focus on His character, love, and power. Praise Him. Thank Him. Give Him your undivided attention.
- Invite the Holy Spirit: to take complete control and freshly fill you with His power. Surrender your entire being to God.
- Ask according to Scripture: knowing the Spirit understands your heart and intercedes for you even if you don’t say the right words.
“And He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” Romans 8:27
Consider the multifaceted role of the Holy Spirit as you pray. He is our Comforter, Strengthener, Advocate, Intercessor, Counselor, Helper (John 14:16–18).
The Holy Spirit helps our weakness and prays through us, expressing our deepest needs to God the Father who will answer according to what He knows is best for us and those we pray for.
